- Notes:
- Expelled from House in 1947 for contempt arising from newspaper article. A birth certificate records the birth of Ernest George Alligan on 16 Feb. 1900. Much of the information in the printed sources about Garry Allighan is inaccurate as becomes clear when looking at the 1901 census details and the indexes to births for the period 1895-1905. His year of birth is usually given as 1900 but sometimes as 1898, 1899 or 1901. No birth registered in England in these years matches what is known about him. The surname was originally Alligan not Allighan. He came from the Edmonton/Enfield area, as almost all the Alligans did and where they are still to be found today, and the future M.P. seems to have been the only one who changed the spelling of his surname. His original forename was not Garry – nobody was called Garry in 1900. The printed sources consistently say that his father’s name was George and that he was born on 16 February. There were several other Alligan births in the Edmonton area at this period but no other sons of George Alligan were born on 16 February. The coincidence of these details seems irresistible. While there is a remote possibility that the future M.P. could have been born abroad there is no evidence that this is likely. After Allighan’s expulsion from the House he went to South Africa and it seems that he died there, probably in 1978.
